Winter Villains – House of Knives | mp3hugger ~ indie mp3s you can ...Winter Villains are everything I liked about Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci and nothing like the bits I didn’t. In essence there are in the upper echelons of the new bands that have stolen my heart this year. Chances are this state of affairs will be repeated in the years that supersede the current one, for 5 songs into their output I can’t for the life of me find a weakness in their hushed pop formula.

The latest batch of tunes were recorded recently in Music Box Studios in Cardiff and in keeping with their name attain a degree of what falling snow must sound like. Yeah, it’s only July but ‘House Of Knives‘ has us wishing it were 15 degrees cooler outside and all we have for warmth is the glow from a phonograph. For Winter Villains belong on vinyl, only then will their genuine craft emerge from a plume of December morning fog. KD.

Bloodbath in the House of Knives Review from BHM: Indie Giallo ...But heart alone cannot overcome basic filmmaking flaws of the magnitude that exist in Bloodbath in the House Of Knives. To put it bluntly, watching this movie is kind of like watching someone’s workprint that got released to a legitimate DVD. The few things mentioned above that go right are utterly dwarfed by a series of flaws that cripple the film beyond repair.

If there’s one thing that can absolutely be said about the indie giallo homage Bloodbath in the House Of Knives, it’s that Ted Moehring seems to know the key archetypes of a giallo and tries to incorporate every one of them into this standard giallo storyline. He’s got the bizarre, wordy title seen elsewhere in the subgenre with such films as Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key and The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion. He also manages to get a few moments of great tension, particularly a torture scene involving a topless woman being menaced with skewers and needles. He uses some strange camera angles and odd colored lighting and filters on certain shots. There are also some passably decent low-budget practical effects. The story even creates the usual obvious red herrings regarding the killer. Whatever else can be said about the film, his heart was in the right place.

The actors are universally amateur and pretty terrible. The only exception to that rule is Lloyd Kaufman’s cameo as a lawyer, which is played just as hammy as is expected from a Kaufman appearance. Beyond him, almost every single actor in the film has next to no ability to emote or react appropriately at all. In fact, this film has the ‘dishonor’ of featuring one of the worst line readings I’ve ever heard when Ivy is told that one of the killer’s threats has come true and a friend of hers has died’ leading to a three-person discussion of this in the most inappropriately apathetic monotones possible.

Celebrating Dad with gifts from House of Knives on South Granville ...Every barber knows that nothing gives a closer shave than a single bladed Dovo safety razor or straight razor, especially if combined with a premium quality shaving brush. A quality boar or badger hair shaving brush will also reduce razor burn by applying soap under, instead of just on top of beard stubble. Once Dad masters the art of wet shaving with a single blade, he’ll never go back to those expensive multi-bladed razors again.

Whether it’s fixing the fence, replacing a hinge, trimming a wire, or simply slicing up an orange, every dad needs a good multi-tool. A quality multi-tool is like a pocket toolbox and will save time and increase productivity by reducing trips to the tool shed. House Of Knives‘ broad selection of multi-tools start from the pocket-sized CRKT Guppie, to the handy Leatherman Charge or the beautifully machined Swisstool.

Home-made horror films can be either a joy or a torture, and the best ones are both. BLOODBATH IN THE House Of Knives is one of these, a convoluted roller coaster of a film, with a lot going for it. There are some truly gruesome murders and abundant female nudity, as well as surprisingly spirited performances from a charismatic cast of non-professionals, including super-hottie Anne Reiss as our delicious heroine, and featuring Troma head honcho Lloyd Kaufman, absolutely hilarious as a wise-cracking old lawyer.

A hypnosis demonstration serves as the catalyst for murder in this micro-budgeted, neo-giallo shocker featuring Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman. When Ivy’s friends all start dropping dead, the search for the killer reveals that everyone has a motivation for murder. Could sleaze-ball drug-dealer and pornographer Nick Lemenza be to blame, or has Ivy’s troubled sister Violet finally taken the plunge off the deep end. The more bodies that turn up, the shorter the list of suspects grows, and the greater the chance that Ivy will be the next name on the killer’s growing list of victims.

The film keeps throwing you off guard with about a dozen trick endings that leave your head spinning. Film buffs will recognize knowing references to many a cult classic. at one point, the heroine even takes time out to watch MESA OF LOST WOMEN, for chrissake. The creepy misc en scene is greatly enhanced by an excellent synth score that really captures the spirit of the grindhouse giallo experience. Hell of a poster, too. Well done.
